Atlanta, Georgia – On Saturday, February 25, 2017, at approximately 11:07 PM, the Atlanta Police Department requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to investigate an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, Georgia.  Preliminary information provided by Atlanta authorities indicates that on the same date at approximately 10:30 PM, an Atlanta Police Officer working an off duty job directing traffic encountered a white Ford F350 van.  The van’s driver, a 46 year old male from North Carolina, disregarded the officer’s traffic directions and drove in the direction of the officer.  The officer fired his service weapon, striking the driver of the van.  The van continued left onto Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. from Northside Drive for several blocks before the occupants of the van called 911.  The van came to a stop in the 900 block of Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd.  Additional APD officers and medical personnel arrived on scene.  Medical personnel provided medical assistance to the driver.  The driver was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is listed as stable with non-life threatening injuries. 

Evidence from the scene indicates that the driver was not armed.  No officers were injured during this incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident.  When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for review.
