Arrest of Former Laurens County Deputy Sheriff
Sandersville, Georgia - On March 16, 2017, former Laurens County Deputy Sheriff Chris Chappell, age 53, was arrested in connection with a kidnapping and assault incident which occurred in Washington County on January 15, 2017. Chappell is accused of being a party to a crime in which his step-sons, Coley and Bailey Brantley, drove from Laurens County to Washington County and allegedly kidnapped their mother and assaulted another woman. Coley and Bailey Brantley, 21 and 20 years old respectively, were arrested in Washington County on the date of the crime.
The Washington County Sheriff’s office initiated the investigation and subsequently requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
Chris Chappell was indicted by a state grand jury on March 15, 2016 and arrested on March 16th after a superior court judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest. Chappell is charged with Kidnapping, Aggravated Battery, Burglary in the First Degree, Subornation of Perjury, Violation of Oath by a Public Official, and Violation of Family Violence Order. Chappell was employed by Laurens County as a deputy sheriff at the time of the incident.
