GBI Investigates Death at Bulloch County Jail
Statesboro, Georgia – On Friday, October 27, 2017, at approximately 12:45 AM, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded to a death at the Bulloch County Jail at the request of Bulloch County Sheriff Noel Brown.
Preliminary information from law enforcement indicates that at approximately 12:15 AM, Harry Almstead, 39, was found hanging in his cell by Jail staff of the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office while conducting a scheduled security and well-being check. Aid was rendered and EMS responded for medical treatment but Almstead was pronounced dead on-scene. Jail staff had contact with Almstead numerous times throughout the previous evening and night. An autopsy was performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah and his death was ruled a suicide by the Medical Examiner.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Ogeechee District Attorney’s Office for any action they deem appropriate.
