GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Douglas County
Douglas County, GA (April 18, 2018) – On Wednesday, April 18, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting. At approximately 2:15 am, two deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call that originated from Justin Oakes, 32, in the public bathroom of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Oakes first entered the lobby of the sheriff’s office at approximately 10:25 pm on Tuesday, April 17th. Oakes made numerous 911 calls from the bathroom. When the two deputies arrived at the sheriff’s office, Oakes was barricaded in the public men’s restroom off of the main lobby of the building. The two deputies were able to push their way into the bathroom. Oakes had a knife and one of the deputies deployed a taser. After being tasered, Oakes continued moving in the direction of the deputies with the knife. One of the deputies shot Oakes and was stabbed by the subject at least twice. The other deputy also received injuries during the confrontation. Oakes was deceased on the scene. The 2 deputies were transported to a local hospital and later released.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for review.
