GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Centerville
Centerville, GA – On Friday, April 27, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requesed by the Centerville Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Two Centerville Police Department officers were fired upon after responding to a domestic dispute at 103 Jeannette Place in Centerville. The subject, later identified as Perry Jason Baggett, age 45, barricaded himself inside his residence after firing on the officers. Officer Jeremy Mashuga was struck once in the stomach and once in his foot. Officer Mashuga was taken to the Navicent Health Center in Macon where he underwent surgery. The other officer was not injured.
The residence was surrounded by responding officers and the Houston County SWAT Team was activated . The standoff between Baggett and law enforcement began around 10:00 PM and ended on Saturday, April 28th at approximately 6:45 a.m., when Baggett was taken into custody.
During the standoff, Baggett fired multiple rounds at the officers from three different weapons. Several officers returned fire during the incident. A GBI robot was utilized to gain entry into the residence for the SWAT team.
Baggett was struck in the hand during the gunfire exchange and was treated at a local hospital. Baggett was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer.
The GBI will continue its independant investigation. Once complete, the case file will be turned over to the Houston Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
