GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in DeKalb County
Stone Mountain, GA (November 20, 2018) – On Monday, November 19, 2018, the GBI was requested by the DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation that occurred in the Mountain Crest Apartment complex, located at 1075 N. Hairston Road in Stone Mountain, DeKalb County, GA. Preliminary information indicates three DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office deputies were at the Chevron Gas Station located at the corner of N. Hairston Road and Center Drive, investigating an unrelated trespass citation. A subject, identified as Shekino Reid, 24, was observed entering the gas station with a gun. The deputies attempted to speak with Reid, when he fled from the deputies. The deputies attempted to detain Reid in the parking lot. Two deputies deployed their tasers on Reid, which was ineffective. Reid eluded the deputies and fled on foot into the apartment complex. A DeKalb County Police Department officer was in the area and responded. The DKPD officer attempted to apprehend Reid behind one of the buildings in the apartment complex. Subsequently, Reid was shot and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where he remains. A gun was located at the scene where the shooting occurred.
The DKPD officer reported a twisted knee.
The GBI will conduct its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
