GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Sandy Springs
Sandy Springs, GA (March 22, 2019) – On Thursday, March 21, 2019, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Sandy Springs Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 6:15 a.m., officers responded to the area of 145 Northwood Drive, NE, Sandy Springs, GA, in reference to a 911 call regarding an armed person. When officers arrived, they encountered a subject, identified as Erick Cruz Ramirez, 32, of Sandy Springs, with a knife. Ramirez did not comply with verbal commands and an officer discharged his firearm, striking Ramirez. Ramirez was transported to a local area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
No officers were injured in this incident.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
