On Saturday, April 27, 2019, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 12:36 a.m., two off-duty DKPD officers working security at the Economy Hotel, located at 1900 Glenfair Road in Decatur, identified an individual who was driving a vehicle with a drive out tag that appeared to be fraudulent at a high rate of speed in the parking lot. They made contact with the driver of the vehicle. During contact with the driver, he produced a handgun and fired at the officers. Officers returned fired, striking the driver. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
One officer sustained a minor injury during the encounter.
Further investigation determined the vehicle was stolen in Atlanta earlier in the month.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be provided to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
