GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in DeKalb County

DeKalb County, GA (September 30, 2020) – On Wednesday, September 30, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 2:30 p.m., federal deputies with the United States Marshals Service and deputies with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office were located at a residence in the 3800 block of Kensingwood Trace in Decatur to arrest Demarco Riley, 27.  Riley was wanted for murder in connection with the death of Charles Hunt on September 22, 2020, in Decatur. 

Deputies knocked and announced their presence at the apartment where Riley was believed to be.  Several occupants were removed from the apartment and one of them confirmed that Riley was in an upstairs room.  Deputies gave commands for Riley to surrender; however, he refused.  During the standoff, one deputy US marshal fired, striking Riley.  Deputies rendered medical aid, but Riley was pronounced dead at the scene. 

An autopsy will be performed tomorrow by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office.

No officers were injured during the incident.                                                                                            

This investigation is still active as agents are continuing to conduct interviews and process evidence.

Once the case is completed, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
