Lavonia, GA (June 3, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Lavonia, GA. The Hart County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Thursday, June 2, 2022. No one was injured during the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that Hart County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a domestic disturbance with an armed man at 1404 Twin Branch Lane in Lavonia. Michael Irvin Belcher, age 54, pointed a gun at the deputies and one of the deputies shot at Belcher, but did not hit him. Belcher was taken into custody.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation of the officer involved shooting. Once complete, the case file will be turned over to the Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
