West Point, Troup County, GA (March 8, 2024) – At the request of the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in West Point, Troup County, Georgia. Russell Jason Heiser age 52, of West Point, GA, was shot, and killed. No deputies were injured in this incident.  

The preliminary information indicates that on Thursday, March 8, 2024, at about 9:30 p.m., deputies with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the 1100 block of Shoemaker Road in West Point, Georgia. Deputies encountered Heiser at the home waving a gun and began to negotiate with Heiser to put the gun down. Deputies were able to remove several people from the home to a safe location, and a stand-off between deputies and Heiser began. During the standoff, Heiser put the gun down, then picked the gun back up and pointed the gun at the deputies. Two deputies shot at Heiser and Heiser retreated into the home. Deputies then heard a single gunshot from inside the home. Deputies then found Heiser inside the home suffering from a single gunshot wound.  

Deputies and EMS personnel provided first aid on the scene and took Heiser to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. 

Heiser will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Atlanta for an autopsy.
